March 2006

We had recently lost our cat Pip after an op which was to repair a torn diaphragm. Unfortunately the cat passed away on the operating table but that was a risk we had to take because his lungs had begun to atrophy. The vet said he must have been knocked by a car at some stage to cause the tear.

Then one day, 2006, the kids were out walking with Eunice and they came across a black & white cat in the empty canal, it was very friendly but couldn’t walk. They brought it home and we fed  and watered it then I took it to the vet and put up posters around Capri.

We told the vet that if the cat was not claimed we would adopt it. It seems the back leg needed to be amputated and when we phoned to see how the cat was doing, to our horror, they had put the cat to sleep. We were pretty upset! We asked them if they knew of any kittens available because we had made the decision to get another cat!

Mia was available, except that the vet had wanted her herself, then she said it was okay, we could take her. Lambert and Paul went to have a look but we could only take her the next day. While they were at the vet, my old friend Emilia phoned to say that she had had a baby, a little girl called Mia about 3 months previously. The kitten was also 3 months old so I named her Mia.

Tom was grade R at the time, about 6 years old and Paul was about 11. Tom had swimming lessons the following day so we collected the kitten Mia from the Four Ways Vet after swimming.

Mia is a light-weight, feisty, awesome cat and we all have scars to prove her temper! Everyday she sits in the sink or basin and waits for us to run a thin stream of water for her to drink from.
